*Tradescantia spathacea*, commonly known as the oyster plant or "Moses-in-the-cradle," is a Central American herb celebrated for its striking foliage and unique small white flowers nestled within boat-shaped purple bracts. Growing in dense, foot-tall rosettes, its waxy, lance-shaped leaves are typically dark green on top and vibrant purple underneath, making it a highly popular ornamental houseplant worldwide. While native to regions like Belize, Guatemala, and southern Mexico, the plant has successfully naturalized in several warm climates, including parts of the southern United States and various tropical islands. Beyond its widespread cultivation as a hardy ornamental in USDA zones 9–12, it also holds traditional medicinal significance in Mexico, where it is utilized as an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory treatment for wounds.
